Annoying record
Oh dear, contrary to the others, I find this a rather annoying, disappointing recording. The overall affect is diminished by the noise of the audience talking and rattling cutlery and glasses. Smith, whose other Verve recordings I adore, attempts a sort of chamber jazz approach and yes demonstrates his creativity. But where's the excitement that's his hallmark? His solos don't lead very far...yes demonstrate masterful technique and a subtley best displayed in 'This Guy's In Love With You'...until his solo fades into an end of pier cheesiness. Benson is workmanlike, turning in excellent accompanying licks, but again lacks any fire. Could be they heard the audience more interested in their conversations than listening and thought, 'ok, let's just provide some nice background music.' Sorry, but for me that's all The Boss is.
