Barbara Dennerlein - Hot Stuff

Rusell Malone quote
I’ve always felt that jazz is the way in which something is done. The material can come from anywhere — what makes it jazz is the way you approach it.

Gerrit Veldman

Jimmy McGriff quote
Music is like a wheel, When you drive a car down a street, you might go down the same street, but you'll run over something today that wasn't there yesterday, so that puts a new look on that tire, and that's the way music is. When it goes over, it picks up something that wasn't there before.

Not So "Young Blues"
In writing first time reviews of OJC discs that are sadly going out-of-print, I was surprised to discover that no one had written about this CD by one of my favorite jazz organists. Better known for his classic Blue Note sessions of the mid 1960s and his pioneering fusion work with John McLaughlin and Tony Williams at the end of that decade, Larry Young got his start by cutting three albums for the Prestige New Jazz series in the early 60s. "Young Blues" is his sophomore effort, and features a rhythm trio of Thornell Schwartz on guitar, Wendell Marshall on bass, and ironically, a drummer named Jimmy Smith! In fact, Young owes much of his young sound to Jimmy Smith the organist, as he hasn't quite found the form that is so mesmerizing on Unity and Mother Ship (see my review of the latter). Nonetheless, this is a solid date with the now standards "Minor Dream" and "Nica's Dream" leading the way. If you have run through the Blue Note Larry Youngs as I have and you are still looking for more, get this limited edition CD before "Young Blues" gets old and dies.
