Straight Jazz

Straight jazz, no fusion. no confusion. These where the first words of Mr. Lou Donaldson after introducing the other members of the band at the concert in the Bimhuis Amsterdam at 16 october 2006. Those other members where drummer Fukushi Tainaka, guitarist Randy Johnston and of course Dr. Lonnie Smith. And that's what we got, straight jazz. See my famous selfmade pictures.

It was a slow-paced concert but very nice. Lou Donaldson - the man who did more for hammond jazz then any sax player I know, correct me if I am wrong, is about 80 years old but still a funky sax player. The first set the band played six compositions varying from own work like "Alligator Bogaloo" to "What a wondeful world". After the break the first composition was Black Bird (Miles Davis) after which Lou had to leave the stage because of fatigue (and age I think).

At that point Dr. Lonnie Smith very professionally took over the role as bandleader from Lou Donaldson. It also turned the concert more into a hammond jazz concert, with some orginal Dr. Lonnie Smith compositions, which wasn't too bad for me. Lonnie Smith is a very charismatic performer who not only is playing his hammond B3 with real rhythmic groove but seems to be one with his instrument, using it as a means for total expression. Very impressive. Of course there where the usual jokes, but I never saw a hammond B3 organist giving away a pedal solo by hand, like on the next picture.

I'll go to a concert with Dr. Lonnie Smith whenever I'll get the opportunity. Lou Donaldson returned to the stage for the last song after the public yelled, but for no more the a few minutes. It's hard to convey the good athmosphere of the concert but the pictures of Koen Scherer do a very good job, so be sure to visit this link.
